Time for Korean in AP: A Call to the College Board
Time for Korean in AP: A Call to the College Board
The Issue
Hello, I’m a ninth -grade student at a High School in San Jose, California. I’m starting this petition to advocate for the College Board to add Korean Language to its AP World Languages and Cultures courses.
The global appreciation of Korean culture and the result of ongoing initiatives by students, parents, educators, and the community, the number of students studying Korean in U.S. Schools has steadily increased.
Korean has become one of the fastest-growing foreign languages at American Universities, attracting not only Korean American students, but also learners from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
Despite the growing demand and recognition, the College Board does not currently offer an AP Korean Language and Culture course, while other world languages, such as Chinese and Japanese, do have AP options.
I strongly believe that this is a timely and appropriate opportunity for the College Board to consider adding AP Korean Language to its AP World Languages and Cultures courses. Establishing this course would allow students nationwide to pursue rigorous academic challenges while gaining valuable linguistic and cultural competence. It would also promote educational equity and support both heritage and non-heritage learners.
I respectfully ask the College Board to consider developing an AP Korean Language and Culture Course. By signing this petition, students, parents, educators, and community members demonstrate the strong and growing demand for AP Korean.
Thank you very much for your consideration and support.
