We wanted to be sure you heard the great news that the DC Council voted yesterday afternoon to #ReNameWilsonHS to Jackson-Reed High School, honoring DC teaching legend Edna Jackson (Wilson's first Black teacher) and famed DCPS Superintendent Vincent Reed (Wilson's first Black principal) after a nearly 4-year campaign. The vote was 11-0, with one Councilmember voting present and one absent.

You can read the Washington Post article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/12/07/wilson-high-jackson-reed/ for more detail.

This has been a true community effort, and we thank all of you for your interest, activism, and endurance in working to correct a historical wrong. We all know that renaming Wilson High School is just one step in a much bigger process, and there is so much more work to do. But today we can feel proud of what we have accomplished together so far.

We sincerely appreciate the DC Council for their careful and very thoughtful consideration of this issue, at a very challenging time in the life of our schools and city. We are especially grateful for the strong leadership of Chairman Phil Mendelson, for his commitment to public engagement, resulting in a true consensus of community support for Jackson-Reed HS, and for not taking the easy way. Special thanks also to Councilmembers Mary Cheh and Kenyan McDuffie for their support and encouragement of our efforts from the outset.

There are a few more steps in the process before the Jackson-Reed name is officially approved. We will keep you posted. In the meantime, enjoy the moment, whisper your farewells to Woodrow Wilson, and help us share the good news.
