Since 1992 when NS power was privatized, Nova Scotian’s have been forced to pay insane fees for an essential service. They are able to charge customers whatever they want, whenever they want. They can demand insane deposits to new customers or people who don’t have good credit. People have no choice but to pay these fees as there is no other option for the general public to acquire power. Either more companies need to be allowed to provide power and take away the monopoly of NS Power - or the government needs to step in and take responsibility for an essential service that people can’t go without. It’s time to focus on how to best utilize this resource while also doing what’s best for the climate and the communities. A private company who’s only aim is profit should not be trusted with such a huge responsibility.
