Support Bird safe Building Practices in the NJ Meadowlands

The Issue

Millions of migrating birds pass through NJ and the Meadowlands returning from southern winter grounds in the spring, back to northern breeding grounds in the US and Canada and then return in the fall.  Fish and Wildlife studies estimate over 300 million birds are killed in collisions with glass buildings. The American Dream Mall, planned by Triple Five owned by The Ghermezian family of Edmonton Canada has just acquired $1.6 billion dollars in construction funding to begin construction on The American Dream Mall in the Meadowlands. This project will also be financed by municipal bonds and a $390 Million dollar tax break and they intend to use a lot of glass and lights right smack in the middle of the Meadowlands.

Per and article dated Feb 13, 2017 in North Jersey by Scott Falllon. "American Dream executives did not say how much of the exterior will be made of glass when they released their latest artist’s renderings and computer-generated video in early December. But it appears that large portions including an indoor amusement park and another that houses water slides will be encased in glass. A spokesman would not comment on whether those portions of the exterior will be made with bird-friendly glass like fritted windows that contain dot patterns or films that are opaque on one side and mostly clear on the other. "

We want to ensure that any construction and glass used in the American Dream Mall meets the standards to reduce the number of possible bird fatalities through collisions and attraction to light and glass. Our tax payer dollars are paying for this building and we should have a say.  We want all legislatures to also support Assemblyman Tim Eustaces Bill requiring all new construction and reconstruction in the Meadowlands meet certain bird safe building standards.  That Bill can be read here. http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2016/Bills/A5000/4795_I1.HTM
