As of April 2019, Ticketmaster implements a business practice known as “Dynamic Price Surging.” Although the face value of the ticket is determined by the client, the performer or entertainment the audience is purchasing tickets for, Ticketmaster interferes with this face value price through its pricing system based on supply and demand. The result is egregiously priced tickets well-beyond their face value price range for high demand shows. In short, Ticketmaster practices the exact same strategy as scalpers.

This problem first came to my attention in January 2020 when purchasing tickets for the American rock band My Chemical Romance. I paid $300 USD for two seated tickets, but many of my fellow concertgoers paid far more. For example, reports came in of “pit tickets”, tickets which are standing room only, for over $3,000 at the Dallas show date. The original face value of these tickets had a range of $60-$150 USD.

My experience is not a sole occurrence. This is a frequent event for any major artist or event whose ticket sales are managed by Ticketmaster. Documented instances from personal anecdotes include price surging for Elton John, KPOP band BTS, and many others.

My request is simple: Ticketmaster, stop price surging. Sell tickets at face value, plus applicable reasonable venue fees. Price surging bars fans from seeing artists, isolates your customer base, and deters your market audience from using your services in other instances. It’s detrimental to you and it’s detrimental to us.
