The Issue

Thyroid cancer is a disease that originates in the thyroid gland, a small, butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of the neck. This gland plays a vital role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature through hormone production.

Thyroid cancer is the most prevalent endocrine malignancy in the Philippines, ranking ninth most common malignancy (Tiangco, Nuique, & Flores, 2020). Its incidence has been rising steadily, particularly among females of reproductive age. Recent data from a tertiary teaching hospital revealed that 35.6% of thyroid specimens examined were malignant (Juan & Paz-Pacheco, 2023).

There are four primary types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common, accounting for about 85% of cases, while follicular cancer grows slowly and is less frequent. Medullary thyroid cancer arises from C cells producing calcitonin and is partially hereditary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer is a rare but aggressive form, often diagnosed in older adults (Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month | AACR, 2025).

Thyroid cancer not only impacts patients’ health but also affects society through healthcare costs, productivity loss, and emotional stress. Early detection is key, as the disease often appears as a painless neck lump.

Let your whispers turn into roars. Together, we can make sure no story goes unheard, no battle goes unnoticed, and no dream remains unspoken.

Break the silence. Spread the word. Join the movement.
