Do not implement further parking restrictions in the vicinity of the Harris Academy, as a result of the schools proposed expansion

The Issue

As the school has continued to expand, the addition of buildings to the school campus, has also resulted in the implementation of parking restrictions. The latest proposal to once again expand the school, contains further plans to implement double yellow lines and other parking restrictions in Mayflower Road. This will prevent neighbours of the school from being able to park in the vicinity of their own properties and restrict the residents enjoyment of their own homes and neighbourhood. It will mean the surrounding roads of Lancaster Road, Norfolk Place and Hatfield Road, will become a car park for the residents of Mayflower Road. Further parking restrictions in Mayflower Road, will also mean that these surounding roads will be the closest available drop off point to the school, which will be very dangerous as they will become congested, not being designed to take such a propensity of traffic, especially two of the three being a dead end. The expansion of the school should go ahead without having to change the parking restrictions in the area.

John Thank you for your petition. I have previously supported traffic restrictions on Mayflower Road to ensure that there is a harmony between the school, the council and residents. These include: - the railings on the school side of the road, installed to protect children walking to school as people parked on the verges; - further restrictions have been in the form of traffic restrictions during term time and the more recent restriction to allow the CCTV car enforce parking orders (replacing traffic wardens) thereby increasing the enforcement of the order. However, with the expansion of the school over the years, there has been more pressure on the road and I have had representation from residents and Ensign Buses to ensure a smooth flow of traffic especially during peak periods. I have raised my concerns with officers to ensure that road improvements are set in place to reduce the impact on all road users. To that effect, I am due to have a meeting with the highways officer & Harris to discuss this. I am happy to meet with you and other signatories and residents of Mayflower Road to discuss this. Pls let me know are free on Wednesday evening, or any other time you are free. I am due to meet Council officers on Wednesday to discuss this. By the way I have tweeted the petition and posted the petition on my blog: wow.cllrtunde.blogspot.com Cllr Tunde Ojetola

It is important that the concerns of local residents are considered carefully when decisions regarding parking restrictions are made and that residents have the ability to challenge decisions. I have passed details of the petition at change.org to Lucy Magill, Head of Public Protection at Thurrock Council, who is responsible for implementing parking restrictions, outlining the issues raised. I will help to ensure our community agrees amicably how we manage the increased traffic as a result of the creating of extra school places which we know our community desperately needs.
