The Memorial Link is a proposed 5 km physically protected lane (a cycle track) for bicycles and active transportation through the heart of Thunder Bay. It runs along May St and Memorial Ave between John St and Miles St, closely passing most businesses and amenities in the Intercity area.

Crossing Thunder Bay through the Intercity area by bicycle is dangerous. The existing options are either illegal and dangerous (riding on the sidewalk) or just dangerous (riding on a 5-lane street in traffic). Many cities around the world have realized amazing benefits by building cycle tracks connecting businesses, schools and workplaces with the neighbourhoods where people live (Cycle tracks are protected bike lanes where bicycles and cars are segregated from each other). Cycle tracks allow everyone, even those without drivers licenses or cars, the freedom of cheap, safe, comfortable and sustainable transportation on their own terms and on their own schedule.

Memorial Avenue is already one of the busiest corridors in the city for bicycles but most people ride on the sidewalk which is illegal and dangerous.

Studies tell us that building cycle tracks increases bike ridership dramatically among average people. People who need to get to work, get to school or go shopping won't make the choice to ride a bike unless they feel safe doing it. Cycle tracks take up little space, are inexpensive to maintain and have high net economic benefits.

Building the Memorial Link will connect Thunder Bay in a way that hasn't existed in decades. It will take an average rider around 19 minutes to ride safely from City Hall to Bay and Algoma— the same amount of time as taking the bus but with no fare or schedule to worry about.

The Memorial Link is a perfect way to build a better Thunder Bay.
