Holistic Land Management started this petition to Threatened Species Scientific Committee and

Humpback whale species are being removed from the Threatened Species List as a result of population increase. However the population assessment models used to assess the species threatened status is highly criticised by scientific communities as inaccurate and outdated.

Population projects do not take into account data from the past 10 years and do not account for contemporary population threats made by climate change and human activity of the past decade. These influences have been listed as;

underwater noise which interferes with whale communication
pollution
vehicle collisions
getting caught in fishing gear
over-harvesting prey such as krill
marine debris
habitat degradation
climate change

Once taken off the Threatened Species List there will less government resources available for their protection and scientific monitoring.

The decision to remove Megaptera novaeangliae from the threatened species list is open to public consultation until October 2021.

In signing this petition, you will contributing to the public statement to request that humpback whales remain on the Threatened Species List for another 5 years to dedicate resources to their protection and a better understanding of their populations and its influence by climate change.

Please read the statement made by the Whale and Climate Research Program in response of their removal from the Threatened Species List for details of the implications;
