HomeGrown Heroes is needing your support to advocate for the sponsorship of an educational mobile market that will be used to provide fresh produce to our communities and schools. High Point, NC is currently ranked 9th in the nation for food insecurity. A large portion of the population that is effected by hunger is children.
We know our greatest opportunity to educate our children about food is through our school system, especially given the fact that for most children school meals are the only food they receive for the day. This is why HomeGrown Heroes has been working in partnership with FoodCorps at Parkview Elementary as a pilot school to develop a food education and gardening program that can be implemented in other schools in our area.
The produced that is grown in the school gardens by the students will be used on the HomeGrown Heroes Educational Mobile Market to serve the surrounding communities where their families live. We know that the school gardens will not produced enough food to meet the needs of the whole community so we are working with our neighborhood grocery store Superior Foods to help us provide the bulk of the produce from our local farmers. A portion of the proceeds will be used to sustain the school garden and farm to school STEM education programs while supporting our local farmers. Our goal is develop a fully thriving localize food system that supports our schools, families, farmers, and local businesses.
What makes the HomeGrown Heroes Educational Mobile Market "educational" is that we will be offering cooking demonstrations and gardening activities to encourage families to grow together by preparing healthy meals together.
