Include criteria for protection and humane treatment of animals and people in Olympic host city bidding

The barbaric culling of stray dogs and cats for “preparation” of Olympic Games in host cities has caught worldwide attention. The latest cull has been in Sochi, Russia where hundreds of homeless dogs have been victims of inhumane extermination. People have also been victims of Olympic Games “preparation” by being callously uprooted from their homes and relocated to locations where their pets were not permitted.

The lives of animals and people must be enhanced, not degraded, in the name of Olympism.

I ask that the “Candidate Procedure and Questionnaire” used for bidding for host city include mandatory consideration of both animals and people who would otherwise be victims of such thoughtless and cruel acts. Host cities must work with humane society organizations to build shelters and incorporate spay and neuter programs in the years up to the Olympic Games, and show that they will continue these programs in future years. Social programs and business plans must be in place to help displaced people.

“The Olympic movement”  includes the statement:  “The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised in accordance with Olympism and its values.”

The “Olympic Charter”  includes the statements:  “Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles. The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of humankind, with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.”

Therefore, I also ask that the current mandate and vision of Olympism be upheld in relation to the dignity and wellbeing of animals and people.
