To whom it may concern:
“NEVER AGAIN” cannot be allowed to become a vacuous platitude of educational systems across the globe as societies teach generations about the atrocities of the Holocaust. Humanity cannot afford to become cynical about ethnic cleansing.
Russian intellectuals have been targeted, intimidated and have chosen to emigrate. The LGBT community is now living under daily fear and oppression. There are ethnic and religious minorities in Russia who can easily be targeted for political advantage. The historical analogy to the horrors of the 20th century is not an exaggeration.
The first targets of the totalitarian governments prior to the Holocaust were the intellectuals who represented political threats to the establishment. Homosexuals and those with handicaps were then demonized using both religious and cultural justifications. The indifference of internal societies and the international community toward those already disenfranchised enabled the horrific ethnic cleansing that followed.
As a board member of a multi-national company I (we) recognize that you are not responsible for discriminatory legislation enacted by the Russian government. History teaches us that large industrial corporations enabled and legitimized the Fascist regimes of the 20th century through their silence and economic cooperation. The 1936 Olympics offered the NAZI’s a shameful platform to glorify and normalize the realities of the Third Reich.
Adam Smith in the Wealth of Nations emphasized the moral imperatives necessary for the ‘invisible hand’ of economic activity to operate effectively. Please, take a stand and defend the free market. ‘NEVER AGAIN’ cannot become a cynical platitude. Do not sponsor the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
