Over the past weeks, we’ve seen new initiatives appear at Chelsea Theatre. While it is always positive to see activity in our local spaces, the way in which these decisions have been made highlights some of the very concerns our community has been raising.
Too often, we see:
✨ Projects designed for the community, but not with the community
✨ Efforts that feel performative rather than transformative
✨ Limited access to leadership, instead of genuine openness and dialogue
✨ Cultural insensitivity that overlooks the diverse realities of our residents
This is not what true community engagement looks like.
Real engagement starts with listening. It is rooted in cultural awareness, inclusivity, and collaboration with residents and grassroots organisations who hold the wisdom of lived experience. Without this, trust cannot be rebuilt, and the same mistakes of the past are repeated.
Our movement is not about rejection, but about hope. It is about creating a Chelsea Theatre that is safe, inclusive, and vibrant — a place where creativity and culture are co-created with the very people it is meant to serve.
This vision will not be achieved through token gestures, but through care, accountability, and genuine partnership. That is the future we are working towards, and it is one we will continue to demand until it becomes reality.
Together, we are stronger. ✊🏾💛
