THE MEETING TO DECIDE THE OUTCOME IS AGENDA ITEM NO. J.1. MEETING DATE 02/01/2022
The Issue
Sun.01/30/2022
This is not about Oriental Ave. The council voted to keep that name last December .
This is regarding our original choice, Shopper's Lane, or Third Street specifically:
AGENDA ITEM NO.J.1 MEETING DATE 02/01/2022
The proposed name change for Al Harris has private funding, courtesy of Cliff Cummings, the owner of Subaru, and Toyota of San Bernardino.
Mr. Cummings has committed to paying all costs required to rename the street selected.
There are no active addresses on Shopper's Lane and one dormant address on Third Street .
It won't cost the city, private businesses, or the taxpayers, anything to rename one of the streets after Al Harris.
We can not erect a monument ,statue, nor place a plaque on private property.
Given the current climate , there is also no guarantee that the theater will remain a theater.
Even if it does, if there is an ownership change, the new owners can remove any memorial to Al at their pleasure .
However, if anyone is able to procure the funding, and permission to have a monument placed at the theater, you have our complete support.
Al deserves every acknowledgement he can be given.
We have been working towards this since September 2020, the month Al passed away in a Redlands Convalescent home due to complications of Parkinsons Disease and COVID.
Al Harris has been serving our community since 1974 . The last 20 years of his life here in Redlands..
Al was an Army Veteran and a member of the National Guard .
While there are numerous monuments and memorials to Caucasian and Latin members of our community, there is only one memorial to an African American - Israel Beal Park.
This is an opportunity to address this imbalance.
There is no reason not to give Al this honor he deserves.
We have public support, we have secured funding.
We are focused on getting the permission to complete this memorial for Al and intend to see it through.
We need to have people at this meeting- or participating via zoom.
