Your excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta,
According to government statistics, there were over 15 million unemployed Kenyans in 2014.
This is one of the highest unemployment rates on the continent, and in the world.
Every year, close to half-a-million students graduate from high school with high hopes of getting jobs after they complete their higher education. This is besides the over two hundred thousand pupils who miss places in high schools, and therefore acquire some vocational training, or go straight into the “job market.”
This high unemployment rate is threatening the social order in this country, yet we are not seeing any deliberate long term plans from the government to deal with the problem. Crime is on the rise, families are breaking down, young people are getting into alcoholism, jobless youth are becoming suicidal, slum populations are expanding, the number of homeless people is on a constant rise, students in the institutions of higher learning are getting demoralised by the day, divorce is on the rise, dependency rate is at its highest, many Kenyans are surviving from hand to mouth….and so on.
The situation is even worse for those older people with families, but do not have jobs.
The previous governments did not make any concrete attempts to curb and roll back this very dangerous development, and we instead saw temporary patch-ups in the name of Kazi kwa Vijana and Youth Fund projects which sucked up billions of tax payers’ money, and ended up failing, or making very little (or short term) successes.
Your government seems to have surrendered the problem to private capital, which is incapable of solving the problem, because it is the biggest beneficiary of this high state of unemployment. The private sector has been taking advantage of the huge reserve of qualified jobs seekers to keep salaries low, and keep their profits high.
It is the responsibility of the state to ensure the well-being of its people; and engaging its citizens in gainful employment is a critical part of this responsibility.
This is why I request you, as the head of state, to address the unemployment question, and give specific answers on how your government plans to solve this problem, before things get out of hand.
