Remove the offensive definition of "Welsh" from the dictionary to reclaim the word!
Why this petition matters
In the name of Welshery! This is a petition calling for the removal of the offensive usage of the word 'welsh' from Merriam-Websters dictionary. Placed BEFORE the definition of 'Welsh'(meaning from or related to the country of Wales), one can find the term 'welsh' as a verb defined as avoiding one's payment or breaking one's word. This term is rooted in the racist beliefs of 19th century England that the Welsh as a people were cheaters, swindlers and oathbreakers and its modern usage reflects this past and present bigotry. Red Dragon America as an organization works to promote awareness and understanding about all things Welsh and we hope to see a day where one can look up the name of our people in the dictionary and NOT come across this first, let alone at all. It's an outdated and offensive term and the world will be a MUCH better place once it falls into oblivion. It's time to right a historic wrong against Welsh people everywhere and remove this for good!
