Dear Friend,
Earlier this week, Newsy covered our case in a piece that highlights how current immigration policy has affected our Iraqi allies left behind.
In the story, Khalid, one of the interpreter brothers, is interviewed with his sister, Duaa. While both have been resettled in America, they discuss the huge part of them that remains in Iraq. Their family’s refugee case has been stalled for nearly a decade in a backlog of more than 100,000 Iraqis who applied through the program after working for the United States. And the number of US-affiliated Iraqis admitted into our country is at an all-time low.
Khalid and Duaa are fighting for their father, stepmother, and siblings to be reunited with them in America and discuss the danger of them remaining in Iraq due to their affiliation and loyalty to our country.
“I might be a very dark person to say this, but I feel like it’s a matter of time before something happens to them, “ Duaa said. “My worst would be kidnapped.”
“Or killed,” Khalid said.
We are hoping that the increase in media coverage of our case over the past few weeks gets the attention of USCIS. And we are hopeful that USCIS makes the right decision to move this case forward, just as they did almost two and a half years ago when they conditionally approved the family's resettlement.
We are working with congressional offices and a team of immigration attorneys at International Refugee Assistant Project to reunite this family.
Thank you for being a part of this effort and staying in the fight with us.
Pete
