Boris Johnson responds:

Boris Johnson

Dear Petitioner

Thank you for your email about the petition on Change.Org about the Metropolitan Police.

Following six weeks of public engagement, the Mayor of London has now announced that he has agreed to support the Metropolitan Police’s call to purchase water cannon to help enhance their response to riots or other serious and exceptional public disorder. The final decision on whether to license the water cannon for use on the UK mainland now rests with the Home Secretary.

Please find further details about the engagement process on this issue and how this decision was reached by following the link below:

Yours sincerely

we've always had protests, we've never had water cannon. why then, do we suddenly 'need' them now? are they anticipating (or worse, thinking of inciting.) worse civil unrest than ever before? if so, WHY are they thinking this? i think it's obvious, the government are planning to incite and provoke riots in order that they can bring in more oppressive laws to subdue the public, as is happening in the usa. another step in the direction of a police state dictatorship. this is BRITAIN, not NORTH KOREA.

i think they are a great idea , if any rioter is soaked head to foot then they wont want to riot anymore , i think they should add a dye to the water so that the people that get wet are easier to identify , that would stop people turning up just because its a riot

It's not even about crowd control or harm. People rarely protest unless there is something wrong. And those who do for silly reasons usually do not have many protesters and can be handled by standard police forces, horses, blockades or riot police if necessary. Though it would rarely get crazy with such low numbers. You will notice quite simply that those who protest in large numbers have a good reason to do so I.e. the Iraq War. at the time seen as hippies and some force used against them, but afterwards everyone 'now' agrees that the Iraw war was bad. "oh my what a silly mistake we made thinking it was good"

Idiots here suggesting to water cannon human beings.

    Grow up.

So you take two children to protests, well done you are an exemplary parent, your actions could be construed as extremist in the lessons you're teaching them.

Water canons are more crowd friendly than rubber bullets. ... Your petition is the very reason humanity in my opinion fails now days!
