Thank you so much for writing lovely birthday messages about my 78 year old dad (Grandpa) Kamal, which we found very moving. On 5 September, we gathered outside the Iranian embassy London, singing “Happy Birthday” and “Free Grandpa Kamal” in farsi and delivering your messages. Last week, I went to Brussels and delivered your messages to the Iranian embassy to the EU. I also met with senior members of European Foreign Ministry (EEAS), European Parliament and European Council, who pledged to do everything they could to help. Dad is still in Evin prison, still waiting for cataracts operations. After 29 August and 13 September hospital appointments, an eye specialist wrote letters clearly stating that Dad needed operations on each eye, and after each operation needed a week’s recovery outside prison for monitoring and to avoid infections. Even the Legal Medical Organisation has agreed with this request, but the decision is with the Tehran State Prosecutor’s Office. And the results of Dad’s medicals are still at Evin prison reception (10 weeks and counting!), with no one able to pick them up. Who can help? Last week at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson both raised Dad’s case with President Rouhani and Foreign Minister Zarif of Iran, as did EU Foreign Affairs Lead Federica Mogherini. We thank them for their support. But this is the 5th UNGA in a row that this has happened. Iran seems immune to such appeals, and UK/EU seem powerless. Dad was a civil engineer. From 2004 until his “arrest”, he worked for Petronas, the firm that sponsors the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix on this weekend. Petronas’ employees will presumably want to know that their organisation cares about its people when terrible things happen, such as arbitrary detention. If you know anyone who works for Petronas or is associated with them, please mention Dad’s detention and deprival of medical care/visitors/family. Another business development of interest. Next Tuesday and Wednesday, a huge Europe-Iran Forum is taking place in Zurich, with many top European firms and European Ambassadors to Iran taking part. Those involved can be found here: www.europeiranforum.com/ Are these firms aware of the risks of investing in Iran? Will they lobby Iran for Dad’s freedom? Many thanks for your ongoing support and kind thoughts/messages, Kamran and family PS Sky News interviewed me about Dad in August, and you can watch it here (you don’t need to be a member of Facebook to watch): www.facebook.com/freekamalforoughi/videos/1120350884764094/
