Sunday 3rd September marks my dad (Grandpa) Kamal’s 78th birthday, his 7th in a row in Evin prison away from family. We hope that this is Dad’s last birthday before freedom; we worry that he does not have many birthdays left. At least this year my daughters and I will wish Dad happy birthday because it falls on the day of our brief weekly calls. How is Dad’s health? We still don’t know. For the last 5 weeks his medical results have been awaiting collection from Evin prison reception. Dad has not seen them and (with no family in Iran) no one seems to be able to access them. So effectively we’re all being deprived of seeing any results of the many medical tests conducted on Dad, contrary to international medical norms. Dad was seen by an eye specialist last Tuesday, who said he needed his cataracts operations soon and would need a week of constant medical attention afterwards. But we’re not hopeful he’ll get his operations – Dad was first diagnosed with cataracts exactly one year ago and we’re still waiting. Thank you so much to the hundreds of you who wrote lovely birthday messages for Dad – we're all very touched. We'll be handing them to the Iranian embassy London next Tuesday 5th September.
