Dear Supporters,
Unfortunately yesterday Monday 24th October was 77yr old sick Grandpa Kamal’s 2,000th day in Evin prison. Somehow he has survived his ordeal and still remains hopeful. This was a difficult day for us, made easier by support from you, Amnesty and many MPs, peers and MEPs.
From 12.30pm to 2pm, family, friends and Amnesty supporters gathered in the protest area opposite 10 Downing Street to express support for Grandpa Kamal, Nazanin, and 50 year old Roya Nobakht from Stockport, a third British citizen held in Evin prison since 2013.
At 1pm, we delivered an Amnesty petition and an MPs/peers letter to Boris Johnson at the Foreign Office (unfortunately he wasn’t there; we met the Head of Consular instead). The letter called on the UK to seek the immediate release of Grandpa Kamal, Nazanin and Roya, noting “strong humanitarian and health concerns” for all our loved ones.
The letter was co-authored by my MP Oliver Dowden and Nazanin’s MP Tulip Siddiq and co-signed by 124 MPs and peers including 23 London MPs, 7 Shadow Cabinet members, the former Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Crispin Blunt, the Chair of the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission Fiona Bruce, the SNP Foreign Affairs lead Alex Salmond, the Liberal Democrats leader Tim Farron and Foreign Affairs lead Tom Brake.
Soon afterwards, my family, including my two daughters – Grandpa Kamal’s two grandchildren, were allowed past security up to the steps of Number 10 Downing Street to deliver this Change petition to Prime Minister Theresa May. Thank you again for signing this petition.
Then, unexpectedly, who should we bump into but Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, on his way out of 10 Downing Street. I introduced myself and my dad’s situation – unfortunately he only had time for two words: “Oh” and ”Right”, before he was gently ushered away by his political advisers!

For those of you based in the UK and happy to contact your MP, may we ask one favour? There is a new e-petition for MPs to sign expressing grave concern about Grandpa Kamal’s detention and health, calling for his immediate release – the e-petition can be found here with a list of MPs who have signed already: www.parliament.uk/edm/2016-17/564. If your MP has not yet signed, can you send an email stating you are a constituent and ask them to sign? If you are not sure who your MP is, please put your postcode into the green box found in this link: www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/
Finally, today Tuesday 456 MEPs in the European Parliament passed a motion on Iran, which asked Iran to free Grandpa Kamal and other jailed European citizens.
We appreciate so much the support from all of you, so many MPs / peers in the UK and from so many MEPs from every country within the European Union.
Thank you all,
Kamran and family
