Unfortunately 76 year old Grandpa Kamal is still in Evin prison – it’s been a week since he was supposed to have been released. While his lawyer is still being given promising news, we have heard these messages before many times, so we will not believe it until it happens. Many thanks for your support, Kamran and family DETAILS ABOUT GRANDPA KAMAL’S DETENTION • UK citizen Grandpa Kamal is turning 77 years old this September. It will be his 6th birthday inside Evin prison. • He gets no visitors. He is one of the oldest and loneliest prisoners in Iran. • He has not seen his daughter, son and two granddaughters for over 5 years, and was not allowed any contact with them for the first 3 years. Even now he only gets very short calls which have to be in farsi – depriving him of a meaningful relationship with them. • The Iranian authorities’ legal treatment of Grandpa Kamal has been unbelievable. In May 2011 he was taken without arrest warrant or charge and was held in solitary confinement for 18 months. He was forced to attend his “trial” in 2013 without his lawyer present and was not given the opportunity to defend himself against accusations by the notorious Judge Salavati. • The Iranian authorities have never offered any evidence or explanation to justify their treatment of Grandpa Kamal, indeed his name has never appeared in any official public communication and there is no paperwork of the trial. • Later this August, Grandpa Kamal will break the world record for the length of time a European citizen has ever been held in an Iranian jail. • The Iranian authorities could and should have released Grandpa Kamal years ago on time served. They keep indicating they will release him “next week” or “next month”, but never do. • He has been deprived of medical care, receiving only two medicals in November 2015 and May 2016. We are very worried he will collapse and die in Evin prison. • Please ask the Foreign Ministry of your country to lobby Iran for Grandpa Kamal’s immediate and unconditional release, ASAP before it is too late.
