Dear Supporters, Today Tuesday 2 August is the day 76 year old Grandpa Kamal was supposed to have been released. It is late night in Tehran and he is spending his 1,917th night in Evin prison. We are so disappointed. Unfortunately, it is not clear what is going on. One possibility is that bureaucracy is leading to brief delays – Iran is a developing country and processes take time and do not work smoothly. Grandpa Kamal’s lawyer still seems confident that he will be released very soon. However, many times in the past we have had our hopes raised by Iran and then cruelly dashed, and that makes us fear that yet again days will turn into weeks, months, and even years. This past behaviour by Iran has even fooled top UK politicians. Six months ago the then UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond gave an interview to Sky News (in English) saying he was very optimistic that Iran would soon free Grandpa Kamal. This last week, our family has been more hopeful than ever before. But if Grandpa Kamal is not released in the next few days, we will fear the worst.
