Make prescriptions free for people with long term illnesses!

I am a young person who sufferers with several long term medical conditions, called Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome and Vasovagal Syncope. It means that in order to stay living a healthy, normal life, I need to take the following medications everyday; Flecainide and Midodrine, or fainting, heart palpitations or other life threatening consequences will happen.

Right now I am lucky, as a student I get a low income exemption, which means I don’t have to pay for this medication. But, once I graduate I will have to pay £8.60 every month for the key medications that keep me alive.

I have calculated that I will have to spend at least £5,160 on this prescription in my lifetime. That’s the price I’ll have to pay for my life.

The NHS Business authority has a list of “medical exemption guidelines” which outlines a series of long term conditions that are eligible to get their prescriptions for free. But inexplicably many illnesses like mine are left off of this list. Other illnesses not eligible include things like Parkinson's and Motor Neuron Disease.

Most of my friends at university are excited about what their futures hold, I on the other hand am scared about the future, anxious that I will be left counting my pennies from month to month, working out if I can really afford to pay for the medication I need to stay healthy.  This feels unfair to me. It’s not my fault that I was born with a long term illness, it’s not something I chose.

I thought the NHS was supposed to be there to help people like me. So, I am calling on the NHS Business authority to update the medical exemption guidelines, to include all people with long term illnesses.

I know there are concerns about funding for the NHS, but research conducted by the Prescription Charges Coalition has shown that for many long term illnesses making prescriptions free would actually save the NHS money. Because people are less likely to suffer from health complications later down the line.

Please help me in my fight for fairness - it isn’t right that some illnesses are exempt and others are not. We all deserve access to the medicines we need to live.

I know this issue affects people up and down the country. If it affects you, someone you love, or you just believe in a healthcare system that is fair then please stand with me in calling on the NHS Business Authority to make an exemption for paying prescriptions to people with long term medical conditions!
