Protect International Aid: NO to Cuts
0 have signed. Let’s get to 100.
We, the undersigned, call upon the government to protect the UK's commitment to the UN's 0.7% GDP target for overseas aid.
(Note to supporters: Thank you for your interest in supporting my petition. An article outlining its background in more detail can be found on my blog. I ask that you respect my decision, as a vulnerable member of society, to remain anonymous for my own safety.)
Recently, a petition (#200292) has appeared on the UK parliament website calling on the government to cut international aid. Over 15,000 people have signed, supporting this attack on international humanitarianism seemingly without thought for the many innocent lives such a reduction would cost.
We, the undersigned, call upon the government to disregard petition #200292 and to protect international aid.
The UK is the world’s fifth richest country, and the aim to meet the UN's modest target is not an unreasonable one. These funds, though only a very small proportion of the country’s wealth, constitute a vital resource that saves lives and relieves suffering all around the world.
Furthermore, we wish to clarify our support for any reasonable measures to ensure that international aid funds are used appropriately, with the aim of maximising the effectiveness of the help given to those most in need. We do not wish to be blind to instances in which international aid funds have been misused. However, we completely refute and condemn any implication that such occurrences should ever be used as an excuse for reductions to the international aid budget.
