The Issue

There are plenty of better things to worry about when it comes to leaving the European Union. Every single law, regulation and agreement has to be changed. Yet on the front page of Britain's leading tabloid, they celebrate the changing of a passport from burgundy to blue. A distraction from the embarrassment that is this government’s attempt at its ‘red, white and blue Brexit’.

May's so called 'iconic #bluepassport' is anything but. Some 76 nations use a blue passport of their own, and there is nothing European about a burgundy one. It is undeniably popular within the block, but also in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Turkey and  Ethiopia, just to name a few. It was never an EC or EU requirement that we even changed our passport colour back in 1988, it was simply a trend. Croatia’s EU passport is, to this day, the very blue we are being lured towards.

Leaving the EU only requires us to remove two words from the cover, the same goes for drivers licences and the number plate 'EU stars’, and ofcourse the many EU agencies we once hosted that now have to be relocated. Reverting to a simple colour change is nothing more than a celebration of a backwards nostalgia that for most Britons, leave and remain, simply do not care about, and remember that many of us have never lived to se a blue UK passport of our own, so the nostalgia behind it simply does not exist.

Perhaps we aim to look back at our success as a colonial power, but keep in mind the 14 overseas territories that also use the burgundy passport, do we not stand together Brits around the world, in that same 'British Passport' format together, All but one of them where never part of the EU themselves.

I welcome the idea of a fresh new design, perhaps blue should be on the table for a redesign, or green or black, or even pink for all we know.  Don't give into UKIP, The Sun, The Express and the minority of our compatriots who believe that changing the colour of a passport can bring back national pride, lets look at the facts, not the fake news. Think about the current passport, ranked 3rd best in the world, with its 159 visa free destinations, that Her Britannic Majesty allows us to pass through so freely.

People all around the world dream to be a part of this great nation, why are we celebrating a passport that loses access to life, work and retirement in 27 other countries.

Sign this petition to show Britain, that we have bigger priorities than national identity. National identity can be celebrated when we have a Britain that sets a positive example to the world, not a ludicrous one, that we the British people, can identify with.

Theresa May: Think again when it comes to an 'iconic #bluepassport’, we never voted for this, it is nothing more than a symbol, and today it is a symbol of utter shame.
