Change laws surrounding Rabbit ownership in Canada.
The Issue
Rabbits are seen as a "caged pet" and are bought and sold without any adopter education, or even in some instances to minors. When the family brings the rabbit home they quickly find that it's much more complex to care for than they initially believed or were told. This leads to them being surrendered faster than rescues and shelters can keep up with. Local Shelters are turning people away and have formed waitlists for non-emergency cases. Unfortunately, this problem doesn't just stop at the Ottawa borders. This is a common issue across all of Ontario and even Quebec.
In Canada, rabbits are the third most common pet. They deserve to be fought for and included under laws just like dogs and cats. There should be laws set for their appropriate care, and current laws should be changed to reflect our updated knowledge on their health and well-being. We wish to target the laws that are currently only applied to dogs and cats such as inclusions into spay/neuter programs, banning the sales of non-rescue animals in pet stores, and seeking punishment laws for keeping them inappropriate outdoor housing during harsh winter conditions.
