The Issue

Currently, the AQI of Kolkata is around 200+ Breathing at 200+ AQI is like smoking more than 9 cigarettes a day. While we all are working hard, busy making money to secure our future, we often forget about the importance of the quality of the air that we breathe, the water that we drink and the food that we eat that directly affects our output.

Think about the impact of such high pollution on the health of your children, elderly and sick people. In Kolkata, 200+ AQI has become a common thing, every winter and it looks like everybody has gotten used to it. It’s a common sight to find so many people coughing, sneezing, having throat problems, eye infections, etc. but they aren’t worried about the long term impact of this on their health.

Isn’t it possible that some people get lung cancer or other disastrous diseases because of long term exposure to such a high pollution? It is definitely possible; it’s just that we are not thinking about it. And what is the Govt doing to tackle the menace of high pollution? Are they serious about it? Are they doing enough?

It’s high time that we take this problem seriously and request our Govt to take appropriate steps so that our kids won’t blame us for the diseases that they WILL get when they are adults.

Each and every signature is a request to the current State and Central Government of India to do something about it on an urgent basis.
