BLACK BOX WARNING FOR AUSTRALIA
The issue
We strongly recommend that the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) recognizes the need to introduce Black Box Warnings in Australia on all prescribed medication's.
A Black Box Warning is the strictest warning put in the labeling of prescription medications when there is reasonable evidence of an association of a serious hazard with the medication; it appears on a prescription medication’s label and is designed to call attention to serious or life-threatening risks such as suicidal tendencies, addiction, withdrawal and a long list of other adverse side effects often resulting in injury or death. With Black Box Warnings available to the patient they can weigh up if the medication risks outweigh the benefits of treatment.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA has had Black Box Warnings for many years but still we don’t have them in Australia on all medication's. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is failing to protect the Australian public by not having Black Box Warnings on all medications.
It is our right to be informed of Black Box Warnings on our prescription medication labels when we obtain our scripts from our pharmacies for our own safety and the wellbeing of the Australian public.
