In South Africa, students across the country have to do Afrikaans or Zulu, as it is compulsory. Out of 200 students, roughly 160 students do Afrikaans, out of these 160 students, 80 are achieving between 30 and 55. Afrikaans is one of the subjects that is a cause of students failing. The reason mainly is, students struggle to understand, or students simply struggle to speak/do afrikaans.

Yes, there are other subjects like Zulu or French, but not everyone can do Zulu or French, not everyone understands Zulu or French.

On June 16, South Africa celebrates Youth Day, which honours and pays tribute to the memory of the brave school children who lost their lives in the fight for human rights.

On 16 June 1976, black students walked out of classrooms into the streets of Soweto to protest against the racist laws that stood in the way of their education. They were protesting against laws that made Afrikaans compulsory in black township schools throughout the country.

We celebrate a day that hundreds of students sacrificed their lives to put an end to Afrikaans being compulsory, yet 43 years later, we still do afrikaans, in schools, and it is still compulsory. What does this say about the students killed on June 16 that fought for afrikaans not to be compulsory?

Lets stand together to make Afrikaans/Zulu a choice. NOT compulsory!
