I just signed the following petition addressed to: President Barack Obama
Hemp is the solution to preventing the Green House effect. Too many are misinformed and uneducated about hemp and the benefits it provides not only to the fight against Global Warming, but the many other ways it can be used. It can be used for alternative fuel, clothing supplies, paper products, plastics, oils, body care products, and other creative ways, as well as ways yet to be discovered.
There is a social stigma around hemp which first began with President Richard Nixon's "War on Drugs". Since hemp is produced from the Cannabis plant, which is categorized under Schedule I of the Controlled Substance Act. Due to this relation to the Cannabis plant, many people end their search for more information on this topic. The most common misunderstanding about hemp is "People will be using it to get high." No. This false illusion must be dispelled to reveal the truth. Hemp does not have the THC required to produce any sort of euphoria. In fact Dr. David West, who has a Ph.D in Plant Breeding, says in "Hemp and Marijuana: Myths and Realities", "The THC levels in industrial hemp are so low that no one could get high from smoking it. Moreover, hemp contains a relatively high percentage of another cannabinoid, CBD, that actually blocks the marijuana high. Hemp, it turns out, is not only not marijuana; it could be called "antimarijuana."
Hemp's sole purpose is to be used to benefit environment, our society, our WORLD, and even our economy. In 1916, the USDA reported that one acre of Hemp produced as much paper as four acres of trees annually. Not only did hemp produce more, but this paper is stronger and more durable and can be reused about 7 or 8 times, which is outstanding compared to the 3 times wood paper can be reused. This statistic alone should be enough to change the minds of millions of people to support the legalization of hemp.
Hemp is clearly a resourceful and beneficial crop that can provide our country, The United States of America, as well as the world, a cleaner place. With the stigma that once surrounded hemp now broken, it is obvious this crop must quickly become legal within The United States and research for newer products must begin. It is up to the citizens of The United States to get the government to legalize hemp. It is under The First Amendment that we are able to speak as one voice and support the legalization of hemp.
