Abolish Kill Shelters in the United States

The Issue

Each day, thousands of adoptable pets are sent to their deaths by the shelters that have been put in place to help them. This is a great injustice that has been neglected by our country's leaders. These dogs, cats, and other animals deserve a chance at a loving life. The inhumane treatment of animals in kill shelters across America cannot be ignored. These animals who desperately need loving homes are given little to no chance at the happy life they so greatly crave. Dogs and cats are killed in the dozens at large-stream shelters daily. What does that say about our government's value of life? What does that say about our leaders? This great country lies on a thick foundation of compassionate beliefs towards it's citizens. Not doing anything to help our animals would be detrimental to the humanitarian progression of society. With this value in mind, shouldn't we extend the value of life towards all life, not just human? Miami-Dade Animal Services (MDAS) is a prime example of the injustice these precious animals face. MDAS is a high kill animal shelter in the Miami area, and with over 27,000 dogs and cats taken in each year, only a fraction make it out alive. One animal workers' chilling testimony said when dogs were brought to the kill room to be euthanized, they were initially excited thinking they were going for a walk. But as soon as they would reach the door of the room, they would halt and try to squirm away, as if they knew the fate lying ahead of them. Whether it be the terrifying smell of death in the air, or pure animal instinct, we should not let our pets suffer any longer. These stressful euthanasia tactics and environment are all contributing to the war on animals.    World leaders, both historically and in today's modern world have shown a love and value for animals that should transcend into our government's functioning. Our current President has shown his love for dogs through his happy relationship with the First Family's beloved pet, Bo. I am sure that the President himself could testify to the important role an animal plays in a family and show compassion towards the multitude of animal lives lost. Other world leaders who have shown a love for animals include Former President George W. Bush, Queen Elizabeth II, and Former President Bill Clinton just to name a few. With animals already being such an integral part in the lives of many of our leaders, we should strive for justice in the issue at hand. The lack of legislation on this topic is undoubtedly a contributing factor to the value society places on these animals. By not doing anything, we are consenting to millions of animal deaths per year. Ultimately, it is our responsibility as a nation, and as kind-hearted human beings to take a stand when something is not right. By signing this petition you are giving a voice to the millions of animals nationwide who cannot speak up for themselves. If love is a human quality, then why shouldn't we consider the love animals radiate and receive as not just an instance of personification, but a universal call to action.
