Introductions:

The epic anime anthology series, Star Wars Visions, was a masterpiece for Star Wars and anime fans alike and this called for them to demand more Star Wars anime. As for me, I too want more Star Wars anime and so much more. In fact, I would want a Mobile Suit Gundam crossover event for both franchises on each of their 45th anniversaries.

What is Mobile Suit Gundam?

Mobile Suit Gundam is a Star Wars inspired anime for space battles and lightsaber-like weapons known as beam sabers. The anime was developed by Sunrise in Japan and created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. Released on Japanese television in 1979 - two years after Star Wars was premiered in theatres - the story involves two sides at war in the 79th year of the Universal Century. Those sides include the Earth Federation and the Republic of Zeon. During the war, 15-year-old Amuro Ray and his friends living in the space colony called “side 7” was forced into joining the war with him piloting the mobile suit his father developed. The mobile suit that would revolutionise mecha in the years to come known as, “Gundam.” 42 years have passed and its series have expanded into spin offs, movies, ovas, plastic models (Gunpla) and soon enough, a Live Action movie released by Legendary pictures. (Although it did have a live action film once, but it flopped because of the poor quality and story).

What makes Star Wars and Gundam similar?

Star Wars and Gundam may be different franchises, but nonetheless they have similarities in the Star Wars spirit. For example, one of the Gundam’s weapons is the beam saber, which is similar to the lightsaber. The difference is that the beam saber requires man made particles to create a lightsaber effect while a force wielded would require a kyber crystal to build his or her lightsaber. And in Gundam Seed, we learn that the protagonist named Kira is the twin brother of the earth’s Orb organisation leader’s  daughter, Cagalli just like we learned that Luke Skywalker is the twin of Princess Leia Organa.

What inspired me to think of a Mobile Suit Gundam crossover with Star Wars:

I was introduced to Star Wars when I was a few months old as a baby. Since then, I was interested in the franchise and became sort of a true fan. I didn’t know much about Gundam when I was watching videos of a mecha crossover game, Super Robot Wars. But when I looked it up, I was starting to get hooked because of the mecha designs. Then, I came across a Reddit post featuring a fan art of a Gundam mobile suit flying in space with X-Wings and it was amazing. (Reddit link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/kc3kgd/i_want_to_share_my_gundam_x_star_wars_creation/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb) And when I watched Star Wars Visions, I knew that in that moment, I wanted more of this and a crossover with Gundam too. And this is why I made this petition.

I want the story of the crossover to have a blend of both elements of Gundam and Star Wars, like having the Gundam and its rival mobile suit having a lightsaber battle and an epic space battle with both mobile suits and starfighter vehicles. Help me convince Lucasfilm and Sunrise to team up for a crossover collaboration for Star Wars and Gundam’s 45th anniversaries. Please! And thank you for reading.
