It has been quite a year during which more than 300,000 of you have showed your support for our campaign to protect one of the most extraordinary natural places on the planet - Lighthouse Point on Eleuthera in The Bahamas. Last September, The Bahamas was devastated by the climate-charged Hurricane Dorian. Starting last Spring, the coronavirus halted cruise ships and crippled tourism in The Bahamas. The Black Lives Matter movement in the U.S. has also brought attention to years of systemic injustice.
As we work to build back even better in this new era, it is imperative that these challenges be fully considered and addressed. The Last Chance for Lighthouse Point campaign recently wrote a letter urging Disney to supplement its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project to include comprehensive analyses of the impacts associated with these issues: climate change, COVID-19, and environmental injustice.
We do know that Disney’s EIA for the project was submitted for a technical review in December, but the company and the Bahamian Government have been silent on the status of plans for a massive private cruise ship port at Lighthouse Point.
Disney and the Government of The Bahamas (GoB) must address these realities before the required public consultation on the EIA and any reasoned decision on the project.
If you agree, please continue to share the petition link on social media! Thank you for your continued support as we work to achieve a more sustainable, equitable, and just future for Lighthouse Point!
