Cancel "Dumbo" remake and all future remakes of Disney classics
The Issue
For one thing, it's a sign that the studio is running out of ideas. When studios resort to remakes, it's usually because they can't come up with anything new to give to the general public. It's especially ironic because the animation division is doing fantastic with creating wonderful films (I can already see "Tangled", "Wreck-It Ralph", and "Frozen" becoming all-time classics), yet their live-action counterpart cannot seem to do the same. Why not ask these same people to come up with ideas for live action films that are just as brilliant as the animated films?
Second, the Disney films that we grew up with were timeless masterpieces that, for the most part, still hold up remarkably well to this date, so any need to remake and "update" them is predominantly nonexistant, and the fact that Disney cannot seem to grasp the fact that the general public is perfectly satisfied with the original films and instead feels the need to remake these films for a "modern" audience is insulting to the intelligence of said moviegoers.
Third, the people they choose to helm these films are very hit and miss. While Kenneth Branaugh seems trustworthy enough to not completely ruin "Cinderella" (the same can be said for Jon Favreau and "The Jungle Book"), I cannot see how the person who wrote the recent "Transformers" movie can possibly recreate the charm and imagination of "Dumbo".
If you're going to make these films, the why not hire people who understand the original films - or at the very least have a clear understanding of how to make good films - to do these films? It's not as if there aren't people who are capable of making good animated and live action films (Brad Bird, for example, successfully made both "The Incredibles" and "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol"), so as pointless as these films may be, at least they would be watchable.
The reasoning seems to be that Disney cannot make original live-action blockbusters that are both good and successful. If "John Carter" and "The Lone Ranger" are any indication, one can see how this reasoning came to be. However, "John Carter" bombed because of a poor marketing campaign, and "The Lone Ranger" was even worse off because a.) the movie was generally received very negatively, and b.) the movie seemed to be a retread of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series (down to the same director and the same Johnny Depp character), so there was nothing new for audiences to take interest in.
The recent announcement of a "Dumbo" remake is proof that Disney has gone too far. Every signature that this petition can gather is a way of telling Disney that no matter how much money that these remakes may earn for the company, they will not withstand the test of time, as the general public will still come back to the classic Disney films of the past, not only because they remember them, but because they are worth remembering.
