Change dance schools business rates category to “leisure”

The Issue

In light of the recent coronavirus outbreak the government has implemented a 12 month  business rates holiday and grants of up to £25,000 for retail, leisure, and hospitality industries. However dance schools do not fit into any of these “categories” even though they sell their services to the public, and are often located in our town centres. This technicality means that dance schools throughout the UK are faced with paying 100% of their rent and rates despite having to forcibly shut. Most dance teachers are also freelance / self employed so cannot access the employer retention scheme. Quite simply without government help the UK will lose many of its dance schools which are central to their local community, and benefit hundreds of thousands of young children and their families up and down the UK. Please help us raise awareness of dance schools plight and get this changed now!
