Say NO to the Development of a Cell Phone Tower in Mayfair Park

The Issue

We say NO to the development of a cell phone tower in Mayfair Park because we need to protect our children & community from the potential long-term effects of having a cell phone tower in such close proximity to our schools and homes.  THE PROPOSAL: Dolan Realty is proposing a 90 foot (85 foot tower + 5 foot lightning rod) in Mayfair Park in order to alleviate an alleged drop in cell service for Verizon customers in South Westchester. It would improve coverage for a half-mile to one-mile in diameter from its location in the park -- not enough to merit its potential hazards.  WE OBJECT ON THE FOLLOWING GROUNDS: 1. PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS: The World Health Organization suggests that exposing people to high radiation from cell antenna installations have shown some serious health hazards, including raised rates of asthma, autism, ADHD, and other ailments. Moreover, the American Cancer Society calls this an area of "active research" because research is ongoing. Simple logic tells us that a proliferation of cell phone towers in residential areas has not been a societal issue for long enough to conduct adequate long-term studies on long-term health effects. Even a small chance of such a health hazard being in such close proximity to our schools and our homes is unacceptable. Moreover, in order to utilize a zoning loophole, Dolan Realty has lessened the height of the proposed tower, thereby bringing it closer to the ground -- and bringing its subsequent EMF emissions closer to our kids. Again, unacceptable.  2. REAL ESTATE VALUES: Though the Telecommunications Act of 1996 doesn't allow a municipality to prohibit the location of cell towers due to potential adverse health effects, it does not prohibit municipalities from prohibiting these locations on other grounds... such as fears over decreased property values. According to Dr.Sandy Bond of the Electromagnetic Field Safety Network, property values can drop approximately 20% as a result of home-buyers' fears regarding the EMF emissions from towers. Furthermore, the image shown by Dolan Realty at the 11/23/15 meeting was a true eyesore -- not at all like the unobtrusive flag-pole/cell tower in the park on Bond Street.  3. NOISE POLLUTION & LOCAL DISTURBANCE: Cell antenna towers require maintenance that may be performed at any time of day or night. We will inevitably see a number of service trucks in the community that will be an additional unnecessary public nuisance.
