Introduce mandatory registration of trades

Introduce mandatory registration of trades
The issue
In Victoria there are only 2,000 registered trades people compared to 40,000 in New South Wales and 46,000 in Queensland. This is alarming.
It means a lot of the building work in Victoria is being done by people who may have neither the training nor skills to do the job, and because they are not registered, cannot be held accountable for the shortcomings of their work.
This is costing consumers, the community and builders time, money and patience.
If the Victorian Government introduces compulsory registration of trades there will be mandatory skills requirements for tradies. This will mean fewer mistakes, better quality work, safer builds and a strong reputation for the entire industry.
Registering trades means that builders and consumers can review the history of a tradie before employing them and can make contact easily further down the track if any problems arise.
We call on the Andrews Government to introduce mandatory registration of trades by making the appropriate legislative amendments to help consumers and the community to get the best possible building work for Victoria.
