Appeal against the Revised Guidelines on Examinations proposed by the UGC
The Issue
The Vice Chancellor
University of Calcutta
Respected Ma’am,
The most recently published official press released on “UGC REVISED GUIDELINES ON EXAMINATIONS AND ACADEMIC CALENDAR FOR THE UNIVERSITIES IN VIEW OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC” has come as a huge shock for the terminal (final) semester students (both UG and PG) of The University of Calcutta as the UGC has recommended universities to conduct online/offline/blended mode of examination for the terminal semester students by the end of September, 2020.
On the basis of confirmed COVID cases in India stands third and the number of cases is increasing day by day. At this point a return to the offline system seems to be next to impossible, risking the life of many along with their family members. A huge number of students will have to face severe difficulties to travel from their hometowns outside the state; not to mention the mental trauma of infection they will be facing by availing public transport system.
Moreover, it would prove to be an injustice if an online exam is conducted as many don’t have the necessary technical support and after our state had been devastated by the cyclone Amphan, internet connection in most places is severely affected. The commencement of online classes during the lockdown has also proved to be more or less fruitless. And due to this Amphan many students are still out of their shelter.
The previous decision taken by the West Bengal State government of “80%-20%” method of evaluation, passed in the syndicate meeting is most appropriate in the current scenario; which also emphasized on the publication of the final marksheet before July 31, 2020. We appeal to you humbly for your approval and do the needful, taking into consideration of the fact that the lives and careers of many are at stake.
Respectfully,
Student body of CU
