Grundon's application to alter the terms of the Restoration Conditions for Wicklesham Quarry SSSI will be heard on 14th May 2018 - over 6 months after it was made. I am seeking the right to speak to the Committee. In what looks like an attempt by County Council officers to distance themselves from Director Susan Halliwell's denials in letters to me that the pond habitats are protected, a senior planning officer has recently claimed that the County Council itself reported the damage to the ponds as Wildlife Crime! As supporters know, this report was made by me in December 2016 on behalf of the Campaign to Protect Wicklesham Quarry from Development. This attempt to rewrite history appears calculated to give false assurances to the Planning and Regulation Committee about the Restoration Scheme. Following years of delay Grundon was ordered to complete the Restoration Scheme by 30th September 2016, as a result of supporters' accusations of abuse of process. Since then, a Breach of Conditions Notice was issued- but the Restoration Scheme has STILL not been completed. Committed Wicklesham Watchers have followed this story very closely now over many years, and there is no doubt in the minds of supporters that only our actions have prevented this SSSI and Conservation Target Area from being concreted over for warehouses. The cynical attempt to destroy the ponds in 2016 - in spite of their high level of protection as breeding habitats for a European Protected Species - is just the last in a long line of ploys to avoid meeting planning conditions and fulfilling legal responsibilities for environmental protection. I have requested the right to address the Planning and Regulation Committee on 14th May, and intend to present photographic evidence of Wicklesham's ponds. I shall ask the Committee to order Grundon to have a new survey carried out by Enzygo Ltd, to assess the damage, in order to put it right. Unless elected members take back control over the Restoration and Aftercare Schemes, I have no confidence that they will be carried out. Please keep watching! Wicklesham Quarry still needs your support!
