On 5th January 2017 I wrote to tell you that Grundon had been served with A Breach of Conditions Notice, having failed to restore Wicklesham Quarry SSSI by the deadline of 30th September 2016. A new deadline was set- 30th June 2017 - and... yes, you're right, once again the Restoration was not completed.
Perhaps those responsible were still hoping that either Faringdon Neighbourhood Plan or the High Court would let them off their legal obligations. If so, that hope proved false.
Oxfordshire County Council has admitted that the Restoration Scheme will still not be completed until later in 2018. After that, a 5 year programme returning the quarry to agriculture will be carried out, as explicitly set out by the High Court judgment.
Following discovery of official before & after photographs of the protected ponds, police who investigated the obvious damage have stated that the Council was "not concerned"- effectively blocking a prosecution that would damage their reputation.
Local supporters are now waiting for news of whether, and when, Grundon's latest application will go to the Planning Committee. If it does, we intend to put forward evidence in order to try to ensure the original conditions enforced, and that any damage is put right.
Vulnerable sites of biodiversity and habitats for protected species are being lost every day across the UK, in spite of local and national policies for their protection. Local supporters are determined to try to protect Wicklesham Quarry, an internationally important site for its unique geology, and Conservation Target Area with Priority Habitat and European Protected Species. Perhaps future generations will take better care of the natural riches of the environment, and we hope Wicklesham Quarry will still be there - not buried under an industrial estate.
Thank you for the tremendous support you have given to Wicklesham Quarry over the past 3 years, and very best wishes for a very Happy New Year!
