Oxford Geology Trust will be exhibiting some of Wicklesham Quarry's famous fossils on Saturday between 10.30 and 12.00, in Faringdon's historic Old Town Hall, which stands on stone columns in the centre of the town. Free parking is just 50 yards away. Wicklesham's amazing array and variety of over 150 species of marine and terrestrial fossils includes many species that are known to occur nowhere else! They have been recorded in collections from 1699, which makes them probably the oldest fossil specimens ever to have been documented. We can only wonder what people at that time thought these marvels from the earth actually were! Perhaps evidence of life before the biblical flood maybe? Ever since then, Wicklesham's unique fossil record has continued to educate and excite earth scientists from all over the world, and helped to develop our understanding of how these islands were formed, and of the dramatic transitions in land form, climate and wild life. After you have enjoyed the fossils, choose one of Faringdon's excellent pubs for a superb lunch. The Bell and the Crown - both wonderful historic buildings - overlook the Market Place, and just a few yards away are the Wheatsheaf on London Street, and the Red Lion and the Volunteer. If you're popping over from Oxford or further afield, make a day of it. Take in the incredible views across Gloucestershire and the Vale from Folly Hill, and visit All Saints Church, which survived Cromwell's efforts at target practice only slightly stunted, steeple-wise, and the guilty canon ball can still be seen in the Church! And 2 minutes down the road is Great Coxwell Tithe Barn, a 12th Century architectural gem not to be missed. Maybe one day soon we shall be able to include Wicklesham Quarry SSSI in this list of Faringdon's special sites!
