The Utah State GOP recently proposed a bill that the Utah State Senate passed, BANNING sex education in public schools - meaning all sex education classes will be completely eliminated, or offer abstinence-only teaching. Not only this, but the law also includes any discussion of homosexualtiy also banned.

This means, even if a student approaches a teacher about preventative measures to practice safe sex, or if they are struggling with their sexual identity, that teacher is NOT ALLOWED to discuss the issue with the student.

This is truly sad, because although abstinence is ideal, it's not realistic. Teens are going to find themselves in "heat of the moment" situations, and be completely unprepared and uninformed of how they can protect themselves. Teens needing guidance or help will have nowhere to turn, because their teachers aren't allowed to talk to them about these issues. This will automatically result in a RISE in teen pregnancy and STDs - not to mention risk of suicide, already on the rise because of bullying.

All of this, of course, accomplishing the exact OPPOSITE of what the Utah State Republicans set out to do by forcing their archaic moral views on the state education system.
