Subject: Dr. Jay Bhattacharya; Fund Dr. Richard Horowitz’ R34 NIH grant on Dapsone treatment for Lyme disease!

Dr. Bhattacharya,
We learned recently (from a Facebook post) that the NIH has denied federal funding for Dr. Richard Horowitz’ research into dapsone combination therapy for Lyme disease after you have committed to “gold-standard science.”
The reason given for the denial: “Lyme is not a chronic persistent infection.”
In 1991 the Lyme disease organism, Borrelia burgdorferi, was grown from the cerebrospinal fluid of Dr. Kenneth Liegner’s Lyme patient Vicki Logan at the Centers for Disease Control in Fort Collins, Colorado despite prior treatment with intravenous antibiotics. Here is a copy of Logan’s CDC positive culture report for your review. (Personal Dropbox storage area)
(Vicki Logan’s Chronic Lyme Autopsy results Page #1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
The destructive nature of Borrelia is evident in the patient’s liver (nutmeg liver), kidneys, heart, lungs and brain. The patient died after the insurer refused additional IV antibiotic therapy.
Our public health officials at the CDC knew early on that we were dealing with an antibiotic resistant/tolerant seronegative disease but suppressed these findings.
There are 700 peer-reviewed publications referencing persistent infection and in a 2018 study all patients were culture positive even after multiple years on antibiotics so there was no relief from current antimicrobials. Some of these patients had taken as many as eleven different types of antibiotics.
Thirty-four years ago Dr. Allen Steere identified chronic Lyme disease which should have set off a red flag prompting an immediate search for better antimicrobials but then did a 180° as he became principal investigator (PI) of the Phase 3 clinical trial for the first Lyme disease vaccine. So all the eggs were put into the vaccine basket while a campaign was orchestrated to discredit the sick and disabled patient population along with the courageous clinicians attempting to help these patients. Apparently, a chronic relapsing seronegative disease did not fit the business model of patent royalties, vaccine development and pharmaceutical profits.

Fast forward to 2026
Opinion
We can’t have a cure for chronic Lyme because no one would take Pfizer’s soon to be released Lyme vaccine or Moderna’s mRNA-1975 and mRNA-1982, which are currently in Phase 2 clinical trials. Just like ivermectin was not allowed for Covid. It has always been about the vaccine.
Dr. Richard Horowitz’ proposed study is the missing research that should have been conducted early in the discovery phase of the disease but as we now know, all the eggs were put into the vaccine basket.
As for Klempner’s NIH funded antibiotic treatment trials, (which set the stage for long-term treatment denial) they are currently under investigation by the NIH Office of Research Integrity (details found here)

To: NIH Research Integrity,
What is the status of this inquiry? Klempner's NIH funded studies set the stage for long-term treatment denial and now errors in those studies have been identified. Since these studies were published, hundreds of thousands if not millions worldwide have been left in a debilitated state as public health agencies across the globe are blindly following what has been wrongly established here in the US.
A response to this inquiry is required by law.

Dear. Mr. Tuttle,

Questions for Dr. Bhattacharya:
1. Will you step in and reverse the decision to deny Dr. Horowitz' funding?
2. Will you investigate the process for funding Lyme research and remove the biased employees holding back progress to find better antimicrobials? One individual comes to mind: Andriana Marques chief of the NIAID Lyme Disease Studies Unit. (see my letter to Marques here)
A response to this inquiry is requested.
Respectfully Submitted,
Carl Tuttle
