The Issue

As an Army Veteran and a resident in a serene yuppie neighborhood, I constantly find myself fearing for my safety—not from the crime waves often discussed in political arenas but from a peril far closer to home: Pit Bulls. These aggressive breeds, often labelled as 'bully breeds,' are infiltrating our peaceful communities, menacingly strolling without leashes as if they are harmless poodles.

One might suggest calling Animal Control, but time and again, my calls are met with indifference. They don't regard the sight of gigantic Pit Bulls wandering unleashed as an emergency. This lack of response underscores a systemic failure to address the threat these animals pose to unsuspecting residents.

It's not just hypothetical fear. The recent tragic incident involving a woman in Oklahoma, who lost all her limbs due to a vicious dog attack, highlights the extent of the danger we are facing ([source](https://people.com/oklahoma-woman-attacked-by-dogs-loses-all-limbs-11816265 Pit Bulls are frequently involved in deadly encounters, with statistics indicating that they are responsible for a significant percentage of dog attack fatalities in the United States. According to Dogsbite.org, Pit Bulls contributed to 66% of dog bite-related fatalities between 2005 and 2017, despite comprising only 6.5% of the total U.S. dog population.

This stark reality demands urgent action. More stringent regulations, including mandatory leashing, muzzling in public spaces, and even a consideration for banning their presence in densely populated residential areas, are necessary steps to safeguard the community.

Our neighborhoods should be places where children play in yards, where elders take afternoon walks, and where everyone feels safe. We must enact legislation that reflects this need for safety and community well-being. Our elected officials must prioritize this issue, ensuring that residents are protected from this underrated yet significant threat.

By signing this petition, you're joining a call to action to safeguard our families and community from the menace of Pit Bull attacks. Let's work together to create safer neighborhoods for everyone.
