The Removal Of The Mahatma Gandhi Statue At UWI, Mona.
The Issue
Mahatma Gandhi is a known racist and sexist thought leader. In 1903, when Gandhi was in South Africa, he wrote that white people there should be "the predominating race." He went further to say black people"are troublesome, very dirty and live like animals.
The UWI, being an institution built on the idea to provide higher education to a predominantly black population, has a statue of Gandhi, to this day, standing in the centre of the Humanities Faculty. It is our hope that the UWI sees this monument as contrary to what is taught in its very classrooms.
Given the nature of today’s international system, we believe that anything that acts as a mockery to the systematic racism faced by black people, should be removed. We want reminders that hope is still there for us, verses reminders that thought leaders like this, were inherently prejudiced.
