A Fix To The Network Situation At University Village & University Commons @ UTD

The Issue

Hello,

If Students will not be provided wireless internet (as it sounds) for an indefinite period, including units that lack direct ethernet connections, how are they expected to use the internet from their apartments and dorms? Will there be exceptions for using personal networking equipment?

As per the housing agreement, UV and UC residents have a reasonable expectation of a usable study environment in our apartments. How does University Village & University Commons plan to uphold the agreement in this respect? Part of our monthly rent pays for this service vital to the ability to complete academic coursework.

As a side note, the security benefits of banning personal networking equipment in the apartments are dubious at best. Those skilled enough to exploit the typical network configuration should be more than capable of attacking users connected to a network less segmented by the personal firewalls built into consumer routers. I think your tenants deserve a better explanation as to why they suddenly can't use hundreds of dollars each of equipment to its fullest extent.
