Lower tuition cost for UTA Summer 2020 due to COVID-19 causing classes to go online
The Issue
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, several universities have no choice but to transfer classes to online. Not only that, several people lost their jobs and everyone has been affected one way or another.
As of Summer 2019, a summer full-time tuition cost was $2485.50 when it was supposed to be $2421.00 based off of the "Summer 2019 Tuition Charts." For Summer 2020, instead of keeping the tuition cost the same, it was increased to $2616.50.
In our accounts, there is a list of what we are being charged for:
We called UTA's Student Accounts and asked for a description of what some charges are for because we did not fully understand what we were being charged for and all we were told was that it was just mandatory in our tuition according to UT System. After doing some research on the website, we noticed a message saying "The rates above do not apply to accelerated online programs."
Our understanding is that we are getting charged for services that we do not physically have access to. This includes:
- Shuttle Bus Fee
- Student Union Fee - access to the UC building + cafeteria
- Recreational Facility Fee
- Intercollegiate Athletics Fee
- Student Service Fee - to help maintain student organizations (we are not able to participate in these organizations in-person)
- Library Service Fee
Total: $288.70
We are not asking to completely get rid of the cost of these services, but rather lower our tuition for the sake of this crisis. It would truly help us students and our family. We understand that UTA is doing their best to adapt to our needs like offering the CARES Act grant of up to $1000, but that is only eligible to students who qualify for FAFSA. At least offer more grants if our tuition increases (Summer, Fall, and Spring). To our understanding, UTA is increasing our tuition to $11,612 this year.
Our life is already complicated enough during this time. Please sign this petition to help raise awareness about the physical counterparts of these services that we do not have access to during the summer so that we can call to UTA's attention why tuition should be lowered.
