Dean Bland recently published an op-ed in the Dallas Morning News entitled "I was caught 'walking while black'".

While Ms. Bland is entitled the right to her opinion and publishing such editorials, it is unfortunate that she has subsequently garnered negative attention to the University of North Texas, especially the Mayborn School of Journalism and it's large student body.

Ms. Bland's journalism does not align with the core values and ideas that the Mayborn School teaches, among those include Journalism Ethics and Standards [truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness, and public accountability] none of which are in accordance with the video provided by the Corinth Police Department that is attached to the article.

As Dean of Journalism Ms. Bland represents her school and students and in writing such an article, does so poorly. In regards to race relations, Ms. Bland's article and various points made throughout do little to further dissolve any racial tension that undoubtedly does still exist in the United States and in Texas.

Furthermore, by including the University's name in her article, Ms. Bland has seemingly violated the University's Board of Regents rules which states:

ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND PUBLIC EXPRESSION: Faculty members are citizens as well as officers of their educational Institution. When faculty members speak or write as citizens, they should be free from institutional censorship or discipline, but their special position in the community imposes special obligations. As scholars and educational officers, they should remember that the public may judge their profession and their Institution by their utterances. Hence, they should at all times be accurate, should exercise appropriate restraint, should show respect for the opinions of others, and should make every effort to indicate that they are not speaking for the Institution.

If you are a student at the University of North Texas I urge you to sign this petition as a call to action to remove Ms. Bland as Dean of the Journalism program at the request of the student body due to her poor display of journalistic abilities and integrity and her severe misrepresentation of the UNT student body by publishing a highly publicized and unwarranted opinion piece in the Dallas Morning News.
