University of Minnesota-Duluth Commencement Rescheduling
The Issue
Due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19, Universities across the country have sent college students home, gone online, and taken other precautionary measures. The University of Minnesota-Duluth recently announced its decision to cancel all commencement ceremonies for the class of 2020. While this is entirely understandable to prioritize safety and wellbeing, U of M students have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, four+ years, and worked tirelessly to gain their degree at this institution--the least they deserve is the chance to walk across a stage and receive recognition. For many people, commencement marks the celebration of an important and meaningful achievement: being the first in their family to graduate college. To take away this day for them would be devastating because of what that walk across the stage represents. This is a monumental moment in all students' lives, and to have this celebration of achievement taken away is heartbreaking. This petition is a call for the U of M board of regents to reschedule graduation at a time when the threat of COVID-19 is no longer imminent: to give thousands of students the recognition they deserve--it's the least the U can do after student's hard work and their millions of dollars in tuition payments.
